The La Grange Cottage is the newest addition to Les Terrasses Cap-à-l’Aigle housing development. Its outstanding architecture compliments the attractive natural setting. Built on the top of a hill, in a densely wooded area, the two-storey house offers a spectacular view of the St. Lawrence River.
The concept behind the house’s architecture is a reinterpretation of a classic Charlevoix barn. The barn-like shape of the house is completely covered with metallic facing, installed in a lengthwise pattern. The house has three entryways, the main entrance and two terraces. These entryways have wood detailing of a tree protected by its bark.
The house is anchored in the ground with concrete and wooden walls and the basement contains the play area and the children’s bedroom. The ground floor, where the main entrance is located, is completely covered in wood and opens into four large bedrooms, each with their own full bathroom. From there, by way of an airy staircase, acting as the spine of the house, we come to the upper floor where the living spaces have large windows offering views of the woods and of the mountains.
The communal living space is warm and luminous. Walls and ceilings are covered in white cedar, bringing light and creating a mirror effect with the radiant concrete floor. The many windows offer a panoramic view of the area and the nearby woods, both reminders of the beauty of nature. An impressive cathedral ceiling and the strategically centered fireplace, serve to unify various activities – reading, cooking, exchanges, meals, etc. All this helps to recreate the comfort found in old wooden homes. At night, the warmth of the fireplace and low lighting bring a peaceful atmosphere to the open plan and help to remind us of the pleasures of traditional old-time family gatherings.
